Paul Keres was Estonian - Northern European, like beechwood, which is one of the most common hardwoods across Scandinavia and the Baltic states. The geographic connection is genuine. Redwood's warm reddish tone also suits Keres' reputation: widely considered the greatest player never to become world champion, admired, warm, respected across the entire chess world.
