The Foldable Alekhine

The Alekhine Folding is a handcrafted wooden chess board combining functionality with traditional craftsmanship. Available in two sizes, it features either a 480x480 mm board with 50 mm squares or a 540x540 mm board with 58 mm squares. Both versions fold for convenient storage and transport, making this board equally suited to tournament play, casual games, or display. The board is constructed from premium hardwoods including maple, birch, and mahogany, selected for their durability and aesthetic qualities.

Choose between a board with algebraic notation printed around the border or a clean, unmarked design depending on your preference. The 50 mm squares accommodate standard chess pieces, whilst the larger 58 mm squares suit Staunton pieces of 3.75 inch height and above. All boards feature a thickness of 14-15 mm, providing stability during play.

Please note that chess pieces are not included with this purchase and are available separately. Each board is individually crafted and may display natural variations in grain and colour that are characteristic of the selected wood.

Alexander Alekhine was Russian but lived in France for most of his adult life and died there. Ebony marquetry is a distinctly French craft tradition. The connection is cultural and geographic - not invented. Alekhine also had the most dramatic, attacking style of any world champion, which matches the visual weight of a pure ebony board.
